Joshua made Birthday Absent, his first short film, when he was only a senior in high school. It won best narrative short at the Ohlone College High School Theatre Festival in Fremont, California. The short tells the story of an outcast high school girl who wants nothing more than to rekindle her friendship with a childhood friend.
